I like to design buildings, rooms, and external spaces that feel good and that deliver the functions that the client is looking for.

I prefer to do this in an environmentally-conscious context.  I’m keenly aware that the way we produce buildings is too much part of the problem, rather than part of the solution.  We need to move quickly to carbon-neutral buildings.

So I’m interested in high levels of insulation; in renewable technologies (solar, photovoltaics, heat pumps, biofuels); in using materials that don’t leave a pile of toxic waste from their production.

However, I don’t want to impose solutions on clients.  I consult throughout the design process, producing options so the client can choose which ones to flesh out further, until we reach the final design. And I’ll talk through materials, details, costs, so that informed choices can be made.  I have also had a fair bit of experience of building things I’ve designed, so I’m grounded in practicality.

I do a lot of house extensions – I like the small-scale – but there are also larger educational, commercial, and community projects in the portfolio.

I studied at Canterbury School of Architecture, and I’ve been a member of the AECB for 15 years.
